About ToolStack Lab

Hi! I’m Maureen, an engineering student with a passion for finding smarter, more affordable ways to learn and work. While many of my classmates relied on expensive, bloated software, I spent years exploring, testing, and refining a personal “survival stack” of tools that actually deliver results.

ToolStack Lab is my answer to the inefficient, overpriced solutions that waste students’ time and money. Every review here comes from real-world use — late-night coding sessions, exam-week chaos, and countless hours of self-directed learning.

Why You Can Trust My Reviews

  • 10,000+ hours of hands-on testing in real academic and project environments.
  • Student perspective — no corporate sponsorships, just honest feedback on what works when budgets are tight.
  • Engineering mindset — I analyze tools like machines, stress-testing them for efficiency and failure points.

My Testing Process

Every tool I review goes through:

  1. Academic stress-test – Can it handle 12-hour study sessions without failing?
  2. Budget check – Does the free version provide real value?
  3. Workflow integration – How many clicks to actually get work done?
  4. Privacy review – What data does it collect, and how is it used?

My Current Survival Stack

These tools made it through my latest exam season:

  • Note-taking: Obsidian — works offline during campus Wi-Fi outages.
  • Coding: VS Code + Copilot (free for students).
  • Time tracking: Toggl Track — even during 3 AM debugging marathons.
  • Project management: GitHub Projects — a free, lightweight Trello alternative.
  • Research: Zotero — handles 100+ PDFs without slowing down my old laptop.

Why I Started ToolStack Lab

I’ve seen too many students:

  • Spend hundreds each semester on unnecessary software.
  • Lose hours trying to navigate overly complex tools.
  • Get trapped in subscriptions they can’t afford.

I created ToolStack Lab to give students and self-learners what I wish I had: honest, practical advice from someone who understands academic chaos.
